Information
Born and raised in an African colony Graham Hobart has a strong connection to the Natural World. Even while in elementary school he was already carving animals in stone and soon progressed to bronze. After years of exploring remote places by bicycle, Hobart decided to start documenting his adventures with a camera. It was at this point that he fell in love with the photographic process and eventually found that he could use this medium to express himself as an artist.
For the past decade, Hobart has dedicated himself to capturing wildlife and landscapes within the infrared spectrum. Despite the tremendous difficulties associated with this process, Hobart has been able to establish an almost illustrative style that harkens back to the days of the old lithograph or etching.
“My work is meant to evoke a haunting nostalgia for a time when the animals roamed freely across the earth challenging those who view my images to actively pursue ways to reverse the current trend of destruction and extinction.”
– Graham Hobart

White Rhino And Her Baby #2
A white Rhino mother and her newborn had just meandered into this patch of dappled light in the forest. They coat themselves in mud as a way of dealing with biting insects that have already descended on the mother’s back.
“My favorite part of this image is the way that the baby appears to be wearing oversized pajamas and will have to grow into them.”

Bison Near Steam Vents
Not far from Yellowstone’s Mud Volcano a bison bellows out to other males. Some bison prefer to live near steam vents because in the really cold weather they can stay warm. Unfortunately this benefit is offset by the fact that the grass in the area is full of silica which grinds their teeth down quicker than those of their relatives further away.

Spooked Buffalo Herd #1
A cloud of dust envelope a small herd of Cape Buffalo as they halt to investigate something that has spooked them. The thing that caught my eye was the little calf (lower right) seeking the protection of the mother under the long shadow of her lethal horn. I chose this moment because their heads had formed an upside-down V as they strained to sniff the air and gather their newborns into the center for protection.

Giant Redwoods in Fog #1

In The Fog Of War- Bison Rut
It is late summer in Yellowstone National Park and the Bison rut is in full swing. The sun is rising and the fog is beginning to clear. Two bulls are sizing each other up as I frantically struggle to change lenses in time for what I am sure is going to be a fight(….and yes, there was a female involved).

Elephant Bull Approaching
I waited in a place where it looked like elephants usually pass. It didn’t take too long for me to be proven correct. I used a long lens to flatten the perspective as well as at a safe distance. The thing that intrigues me in this image is the number of different textures from dust, dry, mud, dead skin as well as hair on the skin’s surface.
